Music lessons aren’t just about music! Learning an instrument helps with memory, discipline, belief in one’s abilities, confidence and problem solving.
What can students expect in lessons with Christen?
Christen’s lessons start with a minimal amount of practice to establish a daily habit and practice increases gradually each school year. This way, the student never feels overwhelmed and is able to achieve a goal that motivates them.
Once students learn the basics, they are allowed to choose their on music to work on. Some students end up wanting to play classical but others may be working on pop/rock or songs from movies. Typically sometime in middle school is when students get to this level.
There are two recitals every year which allow students to show what they’ve learned and share their pieces with family and friends. These are the highlight of the year!
Recitals
Students get to play in two recitals a year. Recitals are a great way to build performing skills, mark progress and let everyone’s family and friends see how far they have come in their piano journey. I encourage students to talk about their pieces before they play so that the audience is more engaged and the student gets some very valuable public speaking experience. It’s always amazing to see all the hard work and dedication leading up to each recital!
Studio Classes
Before each recital I have a studio class. These are so important since they allow students to not only play on the same piano they’ll be using for the recital but also get to play in front of people in a low stakes way before the actual recital day. This help with both nerves and performance presentation.
